Wicked Flies Into the Boston Area in 2026!

The witches of Oz are coming to New England! Wicked—the 3-time Tony Award-winning musical phenomenon—returns to the Boston area with two spectacular engagements in 2026. First, the national tour lands at Providence Performing Arts Center from March 4–22, 2026, followed by a highly anticipated run at Citizens Bank Opera House in Boston from September 23 through November 15, 2026.

With music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz (Godspell, Pippin, The Prince of Egypt) and a book by Winnie Holzman, Wicked tells the untold story of what happened in Oz before Dorothy arrived. The musical follows the extraordinary friendship between Elphaba, a misunderstood green-skinned girl, and Glinda, a popular blonde, as they navigate love, loss, and what it truly means to be “wicked.”

From Broadway to Blockbuster Film

Since opening on Broadway in October 2003, Wicked has become the fourth-longest-running show in Broadway history, selling over 6 million tickets worldwide. The 2024 film adaptation starring Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda became the highest-grossing film based on a Broadway musical in history, earning 7 Academy Award nominations including Best Picture.

The Story of Wicked

Based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, the musical reimagines L. Frank Baum’s classic tale. At Shiz University, two young women from very different backgrounds become unlikely roommates. Elphaba, born with emerald-green skin, is smart, fiery, and deeply misunderstood. Glinda is beautiful, ambitious, and the most popular girl in school. Through rivalry, friendship, and heartbreak, their journeys intertwine until one becomes Glinda the Good and the other is branded the Wicked Witch of the West.

Along the way, audiences meet beloved characters including Fiyero, the charming prince; Madame Morrible, the scheming headmistress; Dr. Dillamond, the persecuted goat professor; and The Wizard himself—whose true nature reveals that wickedness isn’t always what it seems.
